Title Design and Show Open Design for the launch of a prime-time dance competition show. Made while completing the School of Motion Design Bootcamp certificate course.

This project was a pitch for a show open and title design for a Tokyo-based street crew breakdancing competition. I was asked to show how I’d handle green-screened dancer footage, introduce the dance crews, build out the title frame, and incorporate the network’s branding.

For the title design, I aimed for a sleek, futuristic look with the primary typeface—something that captured the energy of street culture without relying on the usual graffiti-inspired tropes. To create contrast, I paired it with a serif font for the secondary type. Its medium contrast and sharp serifs nod subtly to Japanese calligraphy, grounding the design not just in the show’s tone but also in the specific cultural context of this Tokyo-based season.

Moving on to the show open design, I’ll be honest—this one didn’t click right away, so I took some cues from the instructor’s visual style to get started. From there, I pushed the look in my own direction using bold color choices, layered texture, and background imagery that added atmosphere and location. A stylized image of Mt. Fuji runs throughout the boards, placed inside the large circle on each frame to tie everything together. When the dance crews are introduced, Tokyo city imagery enters the frame, grounding them in context. The show title card pulls it all together—Mt. Fuji expands to reveal the full Tokyo skyline, offering a visual payoff that ties back to the show’s identity and location. Then, the final card takes us back to where we started, the theme of bold colors, ellipses, and Mt. Fuji all framing the network logo.

Additional Client Direction:
  • The demographic for the show is Males & Females 18-50
  • This is a primetime show
  • We want this to feel “sexy” and to be inspired by the show’s unique location
