Boards for a :30 commercial promoting an EDM music festival. Made while completing the School of Motion Design Bootcamp certificate course.
The brief for this project was straightforward: Diesel is hosting an EDM festival in Barcelona and needed a design direction and structure for a :30 commercial to promote the event. The festival would take place at a well-known club and feature top EDM acts—think glow sticks, Red Bull and vodkas, and a high-energy crowd. The visual tone needed to reflect what I found to be Diesel’s brand: bold, individualistic, and fashion-forward.
I was drawn to the visual overlap between sound waves and topographical maps—both abstract and expressive, both suggesting movement and terrain. I used this connection to build out a concept where sound waves form the landscape itself—a pulsing environment large enough to lose yourself in, echoing the experience of being physically immersed in music at a massive live event. The waveform lines double as energy trails or light ribbons, visually nodding to the glow stick references in the client’s brief.
Though the music is EDM, I pulled aesthetic cues from 80s and early 2000s tech-influenced album art to layer in a retro-futurist edge. The boards move between wide shots of a small figure navigating this vast electronic soundscape and gritty, high-energy scenes inspired by warehouse raves—bridging the intensity of the crowd with the feeling of personal escape. That balance between edge and polish, intimacy and spectacle, felt like the right fit for Diesel’s brand: rebellious, stylish, and always in motion.
Additional Client Direction:
- 3-6 Design Boards showing us the look and feel of the spot + a rough idea of the structure of the commercial.
- The spot should feature the names of the 3 biggest acts on the bill.
- There needs to be an end-card with festival logo, URL, dates, and location info for the show.
